Meet our judges: Cecile Loedolff

Previous Art Curator for Sasol Art, Cecile Loedolff is once again one of six judges, judging Sasol New Signatures 2017. We had the opportunity to meet up with her and explore her views on this year's competition.

What role do you think SNS plays in the world of South African Art?

Prestigious Art Competitions like Sasol New Signatures are a critical element to career development for local artists.  Entrants are profiled by events like SNS, promoting homegrown talent to the man in the street. If it were not for this platform new artists would go unnoticed.

What advice would you give art collectors? 

I suggest aficionados keep track of these talented artists with an eye to investment..

What would you say to potential entrants?

The SNS is an important platform showcasing emerging artists - their current direction,  creativity and innovation. Competition force artists to make the most of this opportunity and to push the boundaries to the limit  as far as the medium, subject matter and creativity is concerned.

As a judge what will make you sit up and take notice?

I will definitely look at the creativity of each work. I feel you need to shift the boundaries as far as medium and subject matter are concerned. Works should be unique and well executed.

What narratives are emerging in South African art?

Personal matters have been the dominant theme over the past few years and I expect a focus on the same kind of issues. Political and gender issues will always be there and I predict works incorporating craft and found objects will still play a role.

Any tips to artists wanting to participate in the competition.

Artists should endeavour to attend the information sessions and participate in this competition as it is a great platform to start their career. The exposure is free and the marketing of the artists and their art is a special bonus.
