Collision

Used raw leather riempies and plastic chairs

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

A collision implies a sudden and forceful coming together of different bodies or a conflict between two opposing ideas. In this context, both scenarios are applicable.

This work is a collision between two highly recognisable chairs in South Africa: the stackable plastic chair and the Cape Dutch riempie chair. While both chairs serve a similar function, this piece emphasises their differences rather than their similarities, showcasing how these differences overshadow any commonalities. By randomly weaving raw leather riempies into the used plastic chairs, I aim to create not just a juxtaposition but a collision. The riempies have forcefully penetrated the plastic chairs, resulting in an erroneous stacking that compromises the integrity of the chairs.

The juxtaposition within the work highlights the conflict between the materiality, manufacturing processes, aesthetics, and values that are associated with the chairs. Yet this work is not only a representation of the conflict between the chairs’ differences, but alternatively, the chairs become representative of the conflict between and within the people who use them. This concept prompts the viewers to speculate about the conflicts and differences within ideals, interests and experiences.
