ARTIST’S STATEMENT
This ceramic vessel has a very modernised design, representing myself as UmXhosa, a contemporary artist in Gqeberha. Sticking to isiXhosa culture, with this piece I applied more refined and stylised patterns and designs inspired by Wakanda patterns and designs in the Black Panther movie. With this ceramic art piece, I am showing the relationship I had with my great-grandmother, as she played the role of being a mother and father, not only to me but also to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and how her teachings influenced me as I grew up after she passed away in 2017. Those teachings have been a guide through my academic years from 2023 until 2025 at Nelson Mandela University. Portrayed by the three swerving curves on the piece, I have used Red Terracotta Clay, which was bisque fired, then applied copper oxide, Taycos Blue glaze, white and black underglazes, and fired again for the finish.
