Piety

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Piety is a sculptural work created in April 2025, crafted from cold bronze casting, resin, and finished with a faux patina. The piece features a cartoon-like figure that floats above a pedestal, supported by a rod, with a liquid-like form emerging from its face. This surreal gesture injects a sense of movement and transformation into the static form.

The playful, pop art-inspired aesthetic balances the work’s dense subject matter, making it both approachable and thought-provoking. This interplay reflects my ongoing exploration of art as a tool to convey complex narratives in an accessible way. The sculpture also ties into my interest in animation and character creation, a practice sparked by a conversation with a 2D animation lecturer in Zimbabwe. When asked why I wanted to animate, I replied that I hoped to “brainwash kids in a way that serves the greater good of society”. Piety embodies this idea by serving as a character that carries and disseminates narratives of collective betterment.

At its core, Piety is a meditation on surrender — on yielding to unseen forces in the hope of discovering a more meaningful and guided existence. Through this work, I invite viewers to consider the ways in which trust in the intangible can lead to transformation, and how even the most playful forms can carry profound messages.
