Holesale – multiples say cheese
Found objects
Installation: 234 cm x 250 cm x 250 cm
Artist’s Statement
The found object installation, Holesale (2025), consists of multiple yellow found objects, such as an umbrella, rackets, a pan, a book, cups, a teapot, and a yellow table. Objects are suspended in the air and balanced in an illogical way. Their function is completely removed through the making of holes within their surfaces. Humour is used to soften the blow and make the installation more approachable. The work is inspired by the Fluxus artists.
The bright, comical work carries quite a serious message: the search for purpose and identity in a dysfunctional, materialistic world. Many people seek identity in worldly things or try to change themselves to fit in with the world’s unrealistic standards. Individuals become products that need to be sold in our consumerist society. Everyone is created with purpose, but society tries to remove that purpose by filling the God-shaped hole in our hearts with materialistic notions.
The artist multiples, Say Cheese (2025), consisting of an edition of three small, bound, “cheesy” books, neatly packaged in a plastic sleeve, portray how the world wants people to always be put together, presentable, and ready to be “sold.” The Japanese bookbinding technique relates to the Japanese saying, “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.” This saying once again echoes the notion of consumerism and the mass production of identity. Trying to find your purpose in materialistic things will never leave you satisfied. True purpose is rooted in faith and a relationship with God.
