Quiet appeal (Vervet monkey)

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
This painting is a quiet plea for empathy.
During my time living in Durban, I developed a deep affection for the local vervet monkeys — curious, intelligent, and often misunderstood. While I saw wonder, many others saw a nuisance. Their presence in suburban spaces, the result of shrinking wild habitats, is met with hostility more often than compassion.
This work captures a moment of stillness: a solitary monkey, eyes raised in quiet wonder or perhaps in search of acceptance. The pose is gentle, contemplative, even reverent, inviting the viewer to pause and see beyond the label of “pest” to the emotional reality of another living being. With every detail rendered in oil, from the softness of fur to the subtle light in the eye, I aim to reframe perception and stir recognition of shared vulnerability.
Rather than react with fear or frustration, I hope people will look longer and feel deeper — maybe even fall in love with what they once rejected.
This painting is not just a portrait. It is a call to protect, to understand, and to coexist.
