ARTIST’S STATEMENT
We as human beings are often more attuned to our senses than we realise. Don’t believe me? Think about that moment when the visual anatomy of a human face instantly catches our attention, or when a song you hear in the coffee shop gives you goosebumps. Experiences like these have led me to believe that creative expression, both through music and fine art, can connect human beings with one another in our modern online world filled with loneliness.
Through my collection, Fine Art Enriches Space, Music Enriches Time, I aim to combine my passion for art and music by visualising the different sensations that music gives listeners. For some of us, that may have a tactile sensation, such as goosebumps. For others, it stimulates a visual image in your mind or a sense of colour. For me, it alters my perception of time.
Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered is a beautiful Jazz Standard written in the 1940s, and sung by many vocalists to this day. The song brings me tears of joy in a loving sense, detaching me from reality as the harmonies enrich time. I created the painting As Musical Moments Manipulate Time to visually represent that sensation, and subtly incorporated the lyrics of Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered into the background. By doing so, using thick layers of white paint, it represents the more tactile and sensory experience of music, rather than a primarily visual experience, such as fine art on its own.
