Artist’s Statement
Custodian of the Past portrays the idea of spending a life building a legacy and being forced to age quietly in the background as the world changes beyond familiarity, forgetting all that was once built.
The figure sits guarding a mighty tree, now fallen and long-forgotten, while errant swirls of flow pass him by. He is discarded, a dutiful remnant of a past now irrelevant and unspoken. Separate from him, a tree of wires and synthetic parts replaces the world he once recognised and understood.
All changes, and the march of time and progress, are insensitive and face forwards only. Custodian of the Past invites you to contemplate ageing and all the consequences that accompany it. What we build is not permanent, what we cherish is not protected, and what we save for the world may never be archived.
