Artist’s Statement
Rooted Thought examines the relationship between human intelligence and the natural systems from which it originates. While the initial impression is that of a human brain, closer observation reveals that the form is composed entirely of plant roots. This juxtaposition challenges assumptions and prompts viewers to reconsider the boundaries between human cognition and the natural world.
The intricate branching structure of the roots resembles neural pathways, evoking the hidden networks that sustain life beneath the soil. By constructing a symbol of human cognition from a natural form, the work challenges the perception that the human mind exists apart from nature. Instead, it suggests that many of the patterns we associate with intelligence can also be found throughout the living world.
The work draws attention to the similarities between systems often viewed in isolation. Roots, mycelial networks, veins, rivers, and neurons all rely on connection, communication, and exchange, revealing an underlying interconnectedness that links humanity to nature and to other living organisms.
By transforming a plant root into a human brain, Rooted Thought explores the origins of consciousness and invites reflection on the possibility of forms of intelligence that may exist within similar natural systems in ways we do not yet fully comprehend. Intelligence should be considered not as a force that stands apart from nature, but as one thread within a far larger and older network of life.
