Artist’s Statement
The artwork narrates a story of endurance and responsibility. It portrays a mother who continues to work despite the late hour, demonstrating her commitment to providing for her family. The presence of the child reinforces the idea that her labour is motivated by care and necessity rather than personal gain. The quiet atmosphere and dark environment create a sense of struggle, while the abundance of produce suggests her determination to keep striving for a better future. The image ultimately communicates dignity in labour and the strength of women who persist against economic and social challenges.
The primary theme of the artwork is survival through perseverance. It explores the realities of poverty, informal labour, motherhood, and economic struggle. The work also addresses themes of sacrifice, resilience, determination, and the invisible contributions of women street vendors to their families and communities.
The concept behind the artwork is to raise awareness of the hardships faced by women in the informal economy. The artist seeks to honour the strength and dedication of women who work under difficult conditions to prevent hunger and provide basic necessities for their children. By depicting the vendor working at night in an isolated space while carrying her child, the artwork emphasises the emotional and physical burdens that many women bear daily.
