Artist’s Statement

The ceramic sculptures submitted are inspired by the natural formations of stalagmites and stalactites, drawing on the language of caves as spaces of memory, emergence, and introspection. These organic forms echo a personal journey — one of returning, of searching for a sense of home after dislocation. They reflect an identity in motion: evolving, layering, and adapting as it encounters new and familiar environments.

As the forms rise and descend, they embody the tension between grounding and drifting, between belonging and becoming, between the past and the future. The imprinted surfaces and rising shapes reflect how memories and places build up over time, shaping who we are. Along the journey, the evolving ‘self’ gathers fragments of its surroundings; shapes, colours, and textures that become part of its ongoing transformation.

Vibrant glazes act as emotional markers across the surfaces, highlighting key encounters and inner shifts. These distinct moments function as milestones, mapping the transformation of identity as it seeks reconnection with something once known but now changed.

This body of work imagines identity as both fragile and resilient, like the formations it mimics and the medium of clay itself; growing slowly and deliberately through the passage of time and the impact of experience. The sculptures become vessels of that process: rooted yet reaching, shaped by movement, longing, and the quiet persistence of finding one’s way home.
