Artist’s Statement
This artwork forms part of the body of work depicting different oral narratives. The works draw from cultural stories, personal memory, lived experience, and imagined histories. This artist book is a form of adaptation of the Setswana oral story ‘Mosadimogolo le Diphaphatha’. With three varied editions I tell the story in Setswana, English, and Spitori.
These versions allow multiple perspectives to coexist within a single composition. Through this book I explore the translation of language and modes of storytelling through the use of visual and verbal language. The form of the artist book embodies both the story and the storyteller through its visuality, dimensions and in the way that it engages the reader/viewer.
In making these works, I explore how the process of print and bookmaking can be used to reconstruct and retell stories. Every part of the book forms part of an expanded visual language of marks, textures, forms, and text acting simultaneously as artwork and narrative. I seek to create spaces where stories are not fixed but remain open to interpretation and invites viewers to engage and reconstruct meaning as one would when telling and listening to stories.
