Arisha Maharaj | 2025 Regional Judge, Johannesburg

Arisha Maharaj – Senior Art Specialist, Strauss & Co

How did you find the judging process?
In all honesty, it was harder than I expected, there was a lot of talent and potential so it was difficult to be stern on the judging. There was also a lot of enjoyment in the process, seeing new ways in which artists are working, new themes and ideas.

Any standout themes you picked up?
There was a lot of drawing from personal experience and family members, this stood out the most to me in the Johannesburg judging.

Any standout media?
Enjoyed seeing the variety of media, was also pleased to see traditional mediums such as oil paintings, drawings and ceramics.

Any advice to those who did not make it through to the final judging?
Well done on submitting, keep practicing and please enter again. It is a tough competition out there, but do not be dishearten by the results, just keep practicing and growing.

Your thoughts on the role Sasol New Signatures plays in the art ecosystem in SA.
This is a very important award that has created a legacy. Many artists from this award, both runner ups and winners have been successful following this award. It has created an amazing and equal opportunity to artists both formally and self-trained.
