Artist’s Statement
This work draws from my experience as a high school teacher, where I regularly witness the intense pressure placed on students and the impact this has on their emotional well-being, sense of self, and ability to exist as teenagers who are allowed to make mistakes. While this pressure often stems from well-intentioned parental expectations and a desire for success, it can also limit a young person’s freedom to explore, fail, and grow.
At first glance, the artwork appears as a blank or obscured surface. However, when exposed to heat, hidden imagery begins to emerge through a hazy, shifting layer. This transformation reflects how external expectations can suppress identity and emotional security, while still allowing underlying experiences and memories to resurface over time. On a personal level, the work reflects on my own upbringing and how pressure and expectation contributed to anxiety and a diminished sense of stability. I believe this is a shared experience for many people, whether shaped by external demands or internalised expectations.
The work also responds to contemporary art discourse, particularly the way conceptual or “minimal” works are often privileged within certain contexts over more traditional or carefully constructed forms. While there is value in all forms of artistic expression, this piece questions how meaning and worth are assigned within the art world and suggests that greater space should be given to diverse approaches and visual languages.
