Artist’s Statement
Unspoken explores the relationship between intimacy, silence, and visibility through an object that is rarely seen yet remains closest to the body.
I was drawn to the symbolism of an undergarment as a quiet witness to our lives. It accompanies us through ordinary moments and extraordinary ones, absorbing the traces of our lived experiences while remaining hidden from public view. By enlarging and placing this intimate object on a pedestal, I shift it from the private sphere into the public, inviting viewers to confront what is usually concealed.
The work is rooted in my reflection on the hidden stories many women carry—stories shaped by fear, shame, cultural expectations, and the complexity of speaking about abuse. Rather than depicting violence itself, Unspoken considers the silence that often surrounds it. The floral impressions evoke tenderness and beauty, standing in contrast to the invisible burdens the work seeks to acknowledge.
Through this transformation of a familiar object, I invite viewers to consider how ordinary things can become repositories of memory and experience. Unspoken asks us to look beyond appearances and reflect on the stories that remain unseen, unheard, and often unspoken.
