Artist’s Statement
My practice is an ongoing study of the psychological weight found within empty environments. I do not approach a location merely to document its design, but rather to isolate its emotional weight. I have discovered that my work allows me to seek out Observation, Solitude, and Silence, engaging with them not as abstract states of being, but as visceral, living entities. By standing in the tension of a vacant space, I aim to capture stories within a photon of light, isolating a fraction of a second that connects the viewer to a world both deeply familiar and entirely unknown.
The two submitted works serve as foundational studies of South African liminality.
Access point explores the tense, urban edge of the city. Under the glow of a streetlight, the heavy artificial shadows and voyeuristic framing reduce a Johannesburg alleyway into a playground of cinematic unease.
Conversely, Monolith II confronts massive, even brutalist infrastructure surrendering to nature in an intricate, unspoken dance. A looming water tower fades into heavy morning fog, with a lone brick pathway at its feet. Stripping away the identifiable characteristics of a heavily populated Johannesburg location, leaving only a feeling of profound, somewhat mysterious isolation.
These prints are not generated concepts run through some digital cloud and converted into compute; they are physical artifacts of a witnessed moment, converted into undeniable, documented proof of the human experience.
