Artist’s Statement
Stained sanctuary centres on the bathroom, a ritualistic space for privacy and vulnerability but then transforms it into a landscape of unease where past trauma continually resurfaces. It explores the enduring psychological echoes of trauma and sexual assault through the subversion of private spaces. Through a narrative of futile cleansing, a female figure attempts to wash away layers of symbolic dirt, only for the stain to expand and deepen. This psychological frustration is anchored by video art depicting a razor scraping a dirty bar of soap, mapping the internal desire to painfully remove trauma onto a physical object. It is a futile attempt to excise the parts of the self that feels permanently altered. By documenting these repetitive, exhausting actions, the work explores the permanence of memory and the heavy weight of an unerasable past. It investigates how violations of the self, shatter the safety of domestic sanctuaries, leaving the sanctuary of both the room and the body indelibly stained.
