Artist’s Statement
A box beckons, illuminated by a light coming from the bottom drawer. Upon further interaction, the viewer discovers the box’s inner world is much like their own, dense with memory, metaphor and symbolism.
Black ink on transparency plays with light, revealing textures of creatures, flowers and symbols all accompanied by projector slides of captured memories and moments. Within the glass-bottomed drawers, organic matter enclosed in crystals attempts to keep from decomposing, a futile preservation of the ephemeral. With each descending drawer, the imagery becomes increasingly abstract and disorganised, mimicking a physical and psychological descent into the subconscious.
Inspired by the concept “temenos” which refers to a sacred, enclosed area creating a sanctuary. This box becomes a container for the self.
Through an exploration of apophenia, this series investigates the human tendency to forge symbolic connections between unrelated objects, mirroring the fragile associative architecture of memory. Within this enclosed space, identity is continuously dismantled and reborn, ultimately forming our own self-mythology.
