Artist’s Statement
This artwork is a tribute to my grandmother, Mankhaša Raisibe Lekalakala, whose life was a testimony of faith. The hardships she faced was overcome through her Catholic faith that carried her through. The gold rosary radiates her unwavering faith, symbolising hope and perseverance that guided her throughout her life.
My grandmother experienced profound loss. She lost two children and husband in consecutive years. These hardships could have left her broken and hopeless, yet she remained steadfast in her faith. She continued to pray the rosary and trust that God would see her through. Her faith was not built on an easy life but strengthened through every challenge she endured.
The weathered hands tell the story of a woman who worked tirelessly for her family. Every morning at 3 am, she gathered firewood and prepared magwinya to sell in neighbouring streets. She often said, “We must get there before they buy bread”, embodying the saying “mosadi o swara thipa ka bogaleng”.
This artwork reflects the legacy she left behind, while many saw an ordinary woman, I saw a pillar of strength, faith, and determination. She believed in my artistic talent and encouraged me to keep drawing, also reminding me that every gift comes from God. She gave me confidence to pursue my passion. The artist I am today is a reflection of her love, guidance and prayers.
This piece honours her enduring spirit, and reminds me to be hopeful, faithful, and steadfast through every storm.
