Artist’s Statement
Through a meticulously hand painted pixelated grid, this work captures a sunset to examine how digital screen mediation fragments our experience of the natural world.
Constructed with mainly metallic paint, the sunset shifts dynamically with the viewer’s movement, a quality I sought to include to trap and preserve the fleeting atmospheric moment within a simulated network. Existing between coherence and disintegration, the work reads as a whole from a distance, yet up close it dissolves into over 11,000 units.
This oscillation reflects a contemporary condition in which experience is increasingly mediated, fragmented, and reconstructed through digital systems. Finally, I titled it ‘Collapse’ because the painting functions as a quadruple entendre where day collapses into night, the whole image collapses into individual units, direct experience collapses into mediation and the physical image collapses into something that resembles a digital image.
