Artist’s Statement
In this self-portrait, I stand beneath the overwhelming expanse of the sky, dwarfed by the negative space above. The expectations that men carry – stoicism and resilience – the expectations I carry. Manhood is a prestigious title, especially in the Xhosa community; it is achieved through initiation and labour. However, it comes at a cost of unmet expectations, inherited responsibilities, and silent negotiations that expose vulnerabilities.
The choice of black and white is to reduce the composition to shape and form, removing the distraction that comes with colour. The focus is aimed at things that exist beyond the confines of the physical body – internal battles. As I look to the sky, I linger in uncertainty, searching for peace, understanding, and maybe the ability to acknowledge that strength and struggle can coexist.
