Artist’s Statement
My artistic practice centres on exploring the experiences of individuals affected by substance abuse. Through my work, I aim to shed light on the struggles faced by those who wish to overcome addiction but find themselves trapped by its powerful hold. My intention is to encourage society to intervene compassionately and support our brothers and sisters in their journey toward recovery, as substance abuse continues to harm both individuals and communities.
This theme is deeply personal to me. During my secondary school years, I was nearly influenced to experiment with drugs; friends often described it as “cool.” Choosing not to engage in substance use became a defining moment that inspired my commitment to raise awareness and advocate for those seeking help to break free from addiction.
In my creative process, I primarily employ traditional printmaking tools such as carving instruments, linocut materials, and ink. For drawing, I work with charcoal and graphite pencils, which allow me expressive freedom and emotional depth. My art often explores figurative forms, rendered through a realistic technique that emphasises detail and serves as a means of escape from the everyday world.
A recurring motif in my printmaking is the tyre, symbolising journey, progress, and the connection between past, present, and future. My approach to printmaking has been greatly influenced by the work of artist John Roome and Sthenjwa Luthuli, whose practice continues to inspire my dedication to this medium.
