Artist’s Statement
This artwork delves into familial relationships and how they’ve shaped who I am today. I aim to show how previous generations still live within us, whether through memory or inherited personality traits.
The artwork has been placed in a frame to suggest a family photograph. By using layered glass panels in which family figures and the spaces they occupy overlap, the past and present can coexist in a single space. The simplified, more drawn-looking figures represent those who have passed – great aunts and uncles, some I knew and have memories of. Others I only know through stories, some represented by silhouettes. The two front layers contain color figures representing other family members who are still alive. My grandfather, who passed a few years ago, has been represented across two layers of glass in both linear and photographic imagery. Even though he is just a memory now, some of these memories are still so vivid that, to me, it sometimes feels like he’s still here. In this way, the work also pays homage to those who are no longer with us, but continue to shape my identity.
