Artist’s Statement
Wood. Such a common thing here. A medium I dearly love working with — it smells delightful, and with care and attention it can be turned into such wonderful objects and artworks. But ironically, wood is used basically everywhere. Almost everything has existed at some point in time as a wooden version.
The size of the universe is incomprehensible. As a thought experiment — it is estimated that there are around 7.5 sextillion grains of sand on Earth. That is 7,500,000,000,000,000,000,000. It is further estimated that if each grain of sand represented one billion planets, that would possibly account for the minimum number of planets in the universe. Some of these planets are rich with naturally occurring substances like diamond, gold and platinum.
Wood, as far as we know, is found on only one of them. Earth.
And we have used it for just about everything. We even burn it for fun sometimes.
With some planets consisting largely of precious metals and stones that we so desperately hoard here on Earth — what would a small splinter of this unobtainable rarity fetch at an intergalactic or universal auction?
Wood. There is a possibility that it exists only here. And we spend it like there is no tomorrow.
