Artist’s Statement
An Education explores the expectations placed upon children and young adults to pursue success, achievement, and validation, often in service of others before themselves. Drawing from personal experience, the work reflects on the pressure to excel academically, to become a source of pride for family and community, and to follow prescribed pathways toward success.
The book balanced upon the subject’s head functions as both a crown and a burden. It represents knowledge, opportunity, and aspiration, but also the weight of expectation that accompanies them. The act of balancing suggests the ongoing negotiation between personal desires and external demands, between pursuing one’s own happiness and fulfilling the hopes others place upon us.
The portrait questions the authority we grant formal education in defining worth and success. In many societies, higher education has become a symbolic marker of achievement, shaping how individuals are perceived and valued. Yet the work asks whether accomplishment alone guarantees fulfilment, and whether the pursuit of recognition can sometimes come at the expense of personal contentment. The image invites reflection on the measures by which we define a meaningful life and the burdens we carry in pursuit of becoming who we are expected to be.
