Artist’s Statement
Elsewhere explores the tension between physical presence and mental escape. The painting depicts a lone figure seated in a quiet waiting area, completely absorbed in reading, seemingly unaware of both the surrounding environment and the viewer’s gaze. What might initially appear to be an ordinary scene gradually becomes an exploration of attention, isolation, and the inner worlds people inhabit.
The work is less concerned with the act of reading itself than with the transformative power of concentration. The book functions as a doorway into another reality, suggesting that moments of stillness can become acts of departure from the immediate world. In a society characterised by constant movement and distraction, the figure’s focused immersion becomes a subtle form of resistance, valuing contemplation over urgency.
Light and shadow are used to reinforce this psychological space, directing attention toward the figure and the object of their concentration while allowing the surrounding environment to recede into quiet ambiguity. The restrained composition encourages viewers to project their own experiences onto the scene, recalling times when they too have been physically present but mentally far away.
Ultimately, Elsewhere invites reflection on solitude not as loneliness, but as a space for imagination, thought, and temporary escape. It asks viewers to consider where the mind travels when the body remains still and reminds us that some of the most profound journeys occur without taking a single step.
