Artist’s Statement
The photograph explores the relationship between body as artist and object as artwork through the depiction of an artist holding their ceramic skateboard creation. By situating both the ceramic skateboard and the artist within the skatepark, the image transforms the site from a space of movement and performance into one of inner reflection and contemplation, bringing new life into a separate existing artwork.
The subject’s embrace of the skateboard introduces a sense of emotional attachment and care, suggesting the object operates as both artwork and surrogate that performs as a mode for healing and transformation.
The surrounding brick architecture and repeated linear forms visually echo the maze depicted on the skateboard, reinforcing ideas of repetition, containment, and cyclical experience. Traditionally associated with movement and play, the skateboard is transformed into a fragile, static sculptural form. This material shift disrupts the object’s conventional function, repositioning it as an intimate and symbolic artefact rather than a functional object.
Through collaboration between photographer and subject, the work moves beyond documentation to become an extension of the sculptural practice itself. The photograph positions the ceramic object not simply as a standalone artwork, but as a vessel through which themes of fragility, memory, and emotional endurance are materially and visually negotiated.
