Artist’s Statement
To challenge the patriarchal systems normalising the commodification of the female body; I merge my body into a common object. By moulding my teeth into a toothbrush, I present myself as an object to be used, metaphorically depicting my past experiences with men. Utilising the sculptural technique of mould-making and cast creation, I recast the body, continuously revisiting the site of trauma and meditating on my self-image. I have used a toothbrush for its sexualised connotations because it is an item used orally with the repetitive enactment of thrusting back and forth. This further emphasises the way in which I have been sexualised.
