Artist’s Statement
These mixed-media assemblage pamphlets explore how radical religious beliefs weaponize the visual medium to manipulate the natural psychology of people’s needs. Human beings desire meaning within unresolved trauma, guidance, control and importance. When this is enmeshed with charismatic persuasion, convincing logic and fear, susceptibility to influence increases exponentially. Using these tactics, these pamphlets expand on a popular ontology of anti-materialism, beginning with the human body. Presenting this ideology begins with an intentionally general, but urging statement: “Secure Your Soul’s Destination Now!” Conjoined with conventional depictions of such propaganda tools, this tactic simultaneously lulls and pressures the viewer into engagement. Once opened, the viewer is confronted with dissonance-inducing imagery of the raw condition of the natural human features through a series of collages. These collages illustrate the soul as imprisoned within decrepit, volatile features of the human body. Meticulous language use chastises the viewer into considering a fundamental flaw within them and presents this belief as a guiding “overseer” into correcting their sinful ways.
