Artist’s Statement
After the herd is a sculptural installation of three elongated sheep that explores what remains after the pressure to belong. Instead of focusing on the herd itself, the work considers the quiet space that follows, when the movement has stopped, and the individual is left to confront what conformity has demanded.
The sculptures are constructed from steel armatures, shade netting, cement, resin, and synthetic fur. Their scorched and weathered surfaces suggest endurance rather than perfection, carrying the marks of time, pressure, and survival. Although they stand together, they appear emotionally isolated, each occupying its own uncertain space. They are neither defeated nor triumphant, but quietly resilient.
The work is informed by ideas of herd behaviour and the subtle ways contemporary society encourages self-regulation and conformity. Rather than illustrating these ideas directly, I explore them through material, scale, and form. The physical presence of the sculptures is intended to evoke an emotional response before an intellectual one, allowing viewers to find their own points of connection.
The title After the herd refers to a moment following the collective movement. It questions what remains once the need to follow has passed, and whether identity can emerge outside the expectations of the group. The installation is about endurance, vulnerability, and the possibility of rediscovering oneself after the structures that once provided certainty have fallen away.
